The hood of a jeep makes a Christmas table, somewhere in Europe in 1943. (US Army)

Merry Christmas to all the men and women who serve our country and can’t be home for the holidays.

I was at the National Training Center at Ft Irwin, California over one Thanksgiving in the late 80s. Desert. The cooks made a nice TG dinner for us and it was maybe 40 degrees outside and the wind was blowing so hard that it blew the peas off the tray. We ate our cold supper and then four of us squoze into a pup tent together and smoked an after-dinner salad. If I’m honest, it was maybe my best Thanksgiving ever.

This year is quiet but there are years I wish I was at a FOB far far away.

I have heard it said that war is hell, but peacetime is a motherfucker. Merry Christmas.

“somewhere in Europe” is most definitely Italy. The 3rd Infantry Division should be off the frontline now, but they would be landing and stuck at Anzio less than a month later.

“The soft underbelly of Europe.” Yeah, about that, Winston. The other two soldiers were identified as members of the 163d Signal Co.
